FMLA, Short-Term Disability, and Long-Term Disability Are Not the Same Thing

One of the first points of confusion for many employees is understanding that FMLA, short-term disability, and long-term disability are different processes.

They may all show up during a medical leave, but they do not all serve the same purpose.

FMLA generally relates to job-protected leave when certain eligibility requirements are met. Depending on the situation, FMLA may be used for a continuous leave, an intermittent leave, or a reduced work schedule.

For example, an employee may need continuous leave for a period of recovery, or intermittent leave for recurring medical appointments or treatment. The key point is that FMLA is generally connected to protected time away from work — not income replacement.

Short-term disability, often called STD, may provide partial income replacement for a limited period when a non-work-related illness, injury, or medical condition affects your ability to work.

This is where many employees get confused. Being approved for FMLA does not automatically mean short-term disability benefits are approved. They are usually reviewed under different requirements.

Long-term disability, often called LTD, may come into the picture when a medical condition continues beyond the short-term disability period and ongoing functional limitations need to be better understood.

LTD usually involves a longer view of how a condition affects work capacity over time.

These processes can overlap, but they do not all do the same thing. They may involve different forms, timelines, decision-makers, and types of information.

That is where many employees begin to feel overwhelmed.

A helpful first step is to pause and ask:

Which process am I dealing with right now — FMLA, short-term disability, long-term disability, or more than one?

You do not have to know every detail at once. But understanding that these are separate processes can help you ask clearer questions and stay more organized.

At KWG Consulting LLC, I help employees bring clarity to the medical leave process so they can move forward confidently.

If you are unsure which process you are dealing with or what questions to ask next, a free 30-minute clarity consultation can help determine whether educational consulting support is the right fit.
